Julia von Eichel

During her studies at the School of Visual Arts, New York and The Art Institute of Chicago, Julia von Eichel focused on sculpture. While she now concentrates on a two-dimensional surface a sculptural element is always involved in the work. While von Eichel's early work incorporated the use of materials such as pigment, oil paint, wax and tar which she could carve and manipulate with a palette knife, her new works are quite different. Created on museum board, von Eichel, etches images with a razorblade onto a thin surface of burnished oil paint. These works are created to manipulate light without juxtaposing pigments, and are only visible under varying light conditions. Julia von Eichel exhibits in New York City and Washington, DC.
